Swim Lessons

Be the first to know about all our updates and information about our swim lesson program by joining our swim lesson email list. Subscribe here.

We also want to ensure that no one will be denied an opportunity to participate in our swim lesson programming due to economic hardship. As a non-profit organization we offer discounted group swim lessons for children and families in need of financial assistance. Please contact swimlessons@mills.edu for more information on how to apply for financial assistance.

All lessons are 30 minutes long with the exception of the competitive stroke program, which is 1 hour. We are currently offering Tues/Thurs and Sunday sessions but we will be offering much more in summer. There are no refunds for missed classes, and you must wear a swimsuit and bring your own towel. Please take the time to review our entire swim lesson policy before joining us in the water.

Level Prerequisites and Descriptions

The prerequisite for any level is the level's minimum age requirement, successfully passing the previous level or showing all the equivalent skills. Please take the time to review our level description below before enroll in a class for which they are ready. Additionally, the staff will assess and move students on to the next level when they are ready.

Please note: We may combine classes due to the needs of the participants and/or the program.

Pre-school Lessons
Preschool lessons are for children who are ages 3-5. These lessons offer three different swim levels.

Level 1 is all about increasing comfort of being in the water for the swimmer. This is a beginner level class with a high level of assistance by an experienced instructor. If your child is not comfortable putting their face in the water, this is the class for them.

Level 2 is about developing water safety skills. This is a beginner class for kids who are comfortable being in and around the water. The participant must be willing to get their face wet, and stand in chest deep water.

Level 3 is about the development of the swimmers skills. This is an introduction to an intermediate swim level. Participants are comfortable and nearly independent in the water. Swimmers must be able to begin swimming short distances independently and demonstrate proper breath control.

Learn-to-Swim Lessons
Learn-to-swim lessons are for children who are ages 5–11 and offer five different swim levels.

Level 4 is all about building the endurance of the swimmer. This is an intermediate level class. The participant is fully independent in the water. Swimmers must be able to swim medium distances, and demonstrate good knowledge of basic swim strokes.

Level 5 is all about the refinement of the swimmers skills. This is an advanced level class and an introduction into a competitive swim class. Swimmers must be able to swim medium distances without breaking, and demonstrate knowledge of competitive swim strokes.

Competitive Swim
Competitive Swim is for children ages 5–14

Students must be ages 5–14, able to swim at least 25 yards freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke, have basic knowledge of butterfly, and be independent in the water.

Adult/Teen Lessons
Adult/Teen Lessons are for adults and teenagers ages 14 and up

Our adult/teen classes are by experienced swimmers who adapt the lessons to the participant’s goals to improve their skills in and around the water. Beginners and advanced swimmers are welcome in this class.

Private Swim Lessons
Private Swim Lessons are for anyone ages 3 and up

Veteran instructors will adapt their lessons based off the overall goals of the swimmer in order to teach our private swim lesson program. Private lessons are one on one, and we accept swimmers of all skills sets.
