The Mills swim team wrapped up the fall semester at a two-day Invitational at UC Santa Cruz. The Cyclones had a strong showing, with several lifetime best swims, Top Ten times, and top finishes in five events.
Melissa Berkay led the team with three first place finishes in the 400 IM, 200 Fly, and 200 IM. She also placed third in the 100 Fly. Morgan Leishman added two top finishes in the 100 and 200 Back. She added third place swims in the 200 Free and 200 IM. In her first time racing the 1650 Free, she broke the Mills record en route to a second place finish. Wrapping up her stellar meet was a fourth place finish and Mills Top Ten swim in the 100 Free.
Mills first-years, Haley Chamblin and Fia Menedieta, both closed out their first semester with lifetime and season bests. Chamblin had best times in every event she swam, dropping seven seconds in the 500 Free, seven in the 200 Fly, and two in the 100 Fly. Menedieta had season best swims in both the 50 and 100 Free. Aine Piedad (200 Breast, 100 Breast, 200 IM), Shoshana Moed (50 Free), Sophia Preach (100 Free), and Heather Larson (50 Free, 100 Breast) all swam for season bests, while Anamaria Villegas dropped 17 seconds for a lifetime best in the 50 free. Maggie Krystad added season bests in the 500 Free, 100 and 200 Back, and was right on her lifetime best time in the 50 Free.
In their first Mills meet, Paige Shimabuku, Coco Kennedy, and Anneke Moser all had impressive showings. After only two weeks of training, Shimabuku nearly moved on to the Top Ten list in the 200 Breast.
The Cyclones are off until January. They open the spring semester at Chapman on January 12, 2018.
